Behind the Scenes
BBC – Origins of Us
Darkside Animation recently completed over 140 shots for this amazing prime time BBC documentary series. These 3 sequences give a taste of how Darkside put together some of the effects for this fantastic show.
Air New Zealand
The animations created for Air New Zealand were part of a campaign shown across the world; these 3 are just part of a small selection from that campaign.
Iron Maiden
The Final Frontier video made for Iron Maiden was a fantastic experience that was originated entirely in Darkside. We contracted long term collaborator Nick Scott to direct, who did a fantastic job as always. It was an ambitious video that received huge acclaim from fans and press across the world!
Outcasts
Outcasts had some hugely complex shots for a show of this type; this set of videos show how we put together some of these effects. Many of the shots we created are barely noticeable and include set extensions, space shots and even a living virus exploding from one of the actors. Over 300 effects shots were generated for the show which aired on BBC 1 in Feb and march 2011.
Spooks
This was a really fun sequence to create for the show Spooks, the prime time BBC1 show. We effectively had to blow up a real London hotel without creating any damage. We overlaid the real hotel footage with a fake CG front and interior and enhanced the practical explosion with digital flame and debris. We also supervised a practical shoot in another location where the main explosion was filmed against a largely black backdrop and fake set. The explosion created by the extraordinary Neil Campion was so big that the fireball was seen from over a mile away!
Wireframe to photoreal
This is a simple, practical example of a CG object being turned from a mesh into a photoreal animation.
